Usability Upgrade: Linens n' Things
A web page with problems gets a makeover

Client: Linens n' Things*

Project Overview: Linens 'n Things sells products for which there are many options, such as size, color, pattern and more. Providing these multiple options to a single web page on a retail website is difficult. The information on the product page was re-architected to provide a simpler selection process.

Problem areas:
  • The display of multiple bits of information on the page appeared overwhelming and caused customers to abandon the purchase
  • Missing content posed a display issue; some products were missing images, color swatches, etc.
  • Limited inventory for particular products restricted the page design options
  • If a customer selected a color to view, the display of updated images was slow and awkward
  • Back-end limitations with the website code also restricted the page design options and forced a more creative solution
Solutions:
  • The size of the main product image is decreased in order to better organize the rest of the information on the page
  • The display of color swatch images is updated and missing color swatch images are labeled in a consistent manner
  • Out-of-stock inventory is clearly labeled as such
  • The display of the main image in each available color no longer requires a full-page refresh, speeding load time
